Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

The celebration of the Holy Mass is at the heart of our parish life. Throughout each celebration, parishioners generously give of their time and talents to assist our priests and serve the wider parish community.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have the privilege and responsibility of assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion during the celebration of the Holy Mass. Through this ministry, they help ensure that the Eucharist is distributed reverently and efficiently to the faithful gathered for worship.

Serving the Eucharist

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priest and deacon in distributing Holy Communion when their service is needed. Their ministry allows the celebration of the Eucharist to proceed reverently while helping serve the members of our parish family gathered at Mass.

Serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is a special responsibility and an opportunity to serve Christ and His Church. Ministers are expected to approach this ministry with reverence for the Most Blessed Sacrament, a spirit of service, and a commitment to participating faithfully in the liturgical life of the parish.

Extraordinary Ministers serve at Masses throughout St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish, providing opportunities to serve at any of our parish churches. Parishioners are welcome to learn more about this ministry regardless of which of our churches they normally attend.

Bringing Communion to the Homebound

The ministry of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion can also extend beyond the celebration of Mass.

Ministers may assist in bringing Holy Communion to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass because of illness, age, or other circumstances. This important service helps keep homebound members of our parish connected to the Eucharistic life of the Church.

Bringing Holy Communion to those who cannot be physically present is also a meaningful reminder that every member of our parish family remains an important part of our community. Through this ministry, we are able to bring the presence and care of our parish to those who may otherwise be unable to participate with us in person.

A Ministry of Reverence and Service

Serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion requires both a spirit of service and a deep reverence for the Eucharist. Ministers are entrusted with an important role in the celebration of Mass and are called to carry out their responsibilities with care, dignity, and respect.

Those who serve should be dependable and prepared for their assignments while remaining mindful that their ministry is ultimately an act of service to Christ and to His Church.

Training

Those wishing to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion participate in training before beginning their ministry.

Training is offered twice each year, approximately once in early spring and again toward the end of summer. Training dates and times may vary from year to year and will be announced as they are scheduled.

Training provides new ministers with an opportunity to learn about the responsibilities of the ministry, the proper procedures for serving during Mass, and the reverence expected when serving the Eucharist.
