Lectors
Lectors
The celebration of the Holy Mass is at the heart of our parish life. Within the Liturgy of the Word, the Scriptures are proclaimed so that the faithful may hear the Word of God and reflect upon His message.
Lectors have the privilege and responsibility of proclaiming Sacred Scripture during the celebration of the Holy Mass. Through their service, lectors help the parish community hear God’s Word and participate more fully in the Liturgy of the Word.
Proclaiming the Word of God
The ministry of lector is an important part of the celebration of Mass. Lectors proclaim the assigned readings from Sacred Scripture to the congregation, helping make the Word of God heard clearly and reverently.
Serving as a lector involves more than simply reading a passage aloud. Lectors are encouraged to prepare carefully for each assigned reading, taking time to become familiar with the Scripture they will proclaim and to understand its meaning.
Through thoughtful preparation and reverent proclamation, a lector helps the faithful listen to and receive the Word of God.
A Ministry of Faith and Service
Those who serve as lectors are entrusted with an important responsibility within the Sacred Liturgy. Their ministry calls for faith, reverence, preparation, reliability, and a willingness to serve the parish community.
A lector should approach each assignment with an understanding that the words being proclaimed are Sacred Scripture. The manner in which the readings are proclaimed should therefore reflect the dignity and importance of the Word of God.
By giving their time and talents to this ministry, lectors help create a prayerful environment in which the entire congregation can listen, reflect, and respond to God’s Word.
Serving Throughout the Parish
Lectors are scheduled for Masses throughout the year at the churches of St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish. Parishioners have opportunities to serve at any of our parish churches, regardless of which church they normally attend.
Those assigned to a particular Mass are asked to arrive with sufficient time to prepare for the celebration, review the readings, and become familiar with any other responsibilities associated with their assignment.
Being prepared allows lectors to serve with confidence and helps ensure that the Liturgy of the Word is proclaimed with the reverence and dignity it deserves.
Growing Through the Ministry
The ministry of lector can also be an opportunity for personal spiritual growth. Preparing to proclaim Scripture invites ministers to spend time with God’s Word and consider its meaning before sharing it with the parish community.
Whether someone has served as a lector for many years or is considering becoming involved for the first time, this ministry offers a meaningful way to use one’s gifts in service to God and the parish.
